During the twentieth century, Greenville served as the main metropolitan center of Darke County. Most of the county's residents worked as farmers, with Greenville's residents providing various services to their neighbors in the surrounding countryside. In 2000, Greenville was the largest city in the county with a population of 13,294 people. The site of Fort Greene Ville is now a public park in City of Greenville.
