Ohioans have long recognized the importance of history. Thus, they have sought to preserve many of the state's important buildings, landmarks, and other sites. The Ohio Historical Society is responsible for the care of more than sixty sites. Local historical societies also have preserved hundreds of sites across the state. Thanks to the efforts of the various historical societies, the state government, and private groups and individuals, tourists can visit natural, prehistoric, and historic sites in all of Ohio's eighty-eight counties.
