In 1977, the All-American Basketball Alliance (AABA) formed. Organizers of this league hoped to create a second professional basketball minor league in North America, providing more players a chance to compete and hopefully to attract the attention of National Basketball Association teams. The AABA consisted of nineteen teams, but only eight teams actually played. The other eleven teams, including the Ohio Orbits, never formed. The Orbits was named for Ohios important role in space exploration. These teams likely never formed because of the leagues short existence. The league folded in 1978, after its teams played a combined forty games. These games took place from January 6, 1978, to February 2, 1978.
