Youngstown State University (YSU) was established in 1908 in Youngstown, Ohio. In 2005, 13,101 students enrolled in the institution, including 1,298 graduate students. Students came from fifty-six different countries, and foreign students comprised thirteen percent of the student population. YSU also boasts a planetarium, a medical museum, and an art museum.

During the 1990s, Youngstown State University’s football team won more national championships than any other team in the United States during this same period. The team played in the NCAA Division 1-AA, and Jim Tressel was the coach for much of this period. YSU won the national championship in Division 1-AA in 1991, 1993, 1994, and 1997. The team was runner-up in both 1996 and 1999.
