William W. Mather

William Williams Mather was Ohio's third Secretary of Agriculture. The Secretary of Agriculture served as the head of the Ohio State Board of Agriculture.

Mather was born on May 24, 1804, in Brooklyn, New York. He attended West Point from 1823 to 1828 and spent several years in the United States Army. Following his military career, Mather taught geology at the University of Louisiana. He eventually moved to Ohio, where he served as the lead geologist in Ohio's first statewide geological study. In addition to serving in other state positions, including as Secretary of Agriculture from 1851 to 1852, Mather also taught at Ohio University and Marietta College. In 1859, Mather served on the United States Board of Agriculture. He died this same year.
