Colonial Period

Pilgrims establish the Plymouth colony in what is now Massachusetts.

1670

LaSalle, a French explorer and the first European in the Ohio Country, discovers the Ohio River.

1747

The Ohio Company of Virginia forms to settle the Ohio River Valley.

1754

French and Indian War begins.


The United States

1775 - 1783

The American Revolution.

1787

The United Stated Constitution is adopted.


Territorial Period

1787

The Northwest Ordinance establishes the Northwest Territory, which includes the Ohio Country.

1788

Marietta, Ohio's first permanent settlement, is founded.

1795

The Treaty of Greenville is signed, ending Indian Wars in Ohio.

1800

Chillicothe becomes the capitol of the eastern part of the Northwest Territory.

Ohio becomes the 17th state.

Columbus becomes the permanent capitol of Ohio.

Ohioan James A. Garfield becomes the 20th President of the United States.

The first gasoline-powered car in the U.S.

Ohioans Orville and Wilbur Wright fly their first airplane.

The Great Depression.

Ohio's first sales tax.

The Second World War entangles the United States and Ohio.

Ohioan John Glenn orbits the earth.

William O. Walker becomes Ohio's first African-American cabinet member.

Ohio's involvement in the Vietnam War.

Carl Stokes becomes the first African-American mayor of a major city (Cleveland).

Neil Armstrong becomes the first person to walk on the moon.

Public schools in Columbus, Dayton and Cleveland begin busing of pupils to eliminate segregation.

Ohio has its highest unemployment rate since the Great Depression: 14.2%.

1995

International negotiations at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base near Dayton led to the Bosnian peace agreement.
