In 1996, the American Basketball League formed. The goal of this organization was to create a professional basketball league for women. One of the ABL's initial teams was the Columbus Quest, which played its home games in Columbus, Ohio.
The Columbus Quest dominated the ABL during the league's brief existence. The Quest, whose most famous player was former The Ohio State University standout Katie Smith, won the league championship in both the 1996-1997 and the 1997-1998 seasons. Unfortunately, due to competition from the recently created Women's National Basketball Association (WNBA), the ABL collapsed during the middle of the 1998-1999 season. Many of the ABL's former players ended up playing on WNBA teams.
