Lambert Lands
The Lambert Lands were named for the Lambert brothers, two men who owned slaves in Virginia. The Lamberts purchased 265 acres of land in Morgan Township in Gallia County, Ohio. The brothers later freed their slaves and gave the African Americans the land in Ohio. The former slaves and their descendants were to own the land communally. The land remained in the families of these former slaves until 1970, when Gallia County officials seized the land and sold it for back taxes.
Before the American Civil War, the former slaves residing on the Lambert Lands played an active role in the Underground Railroad. They assisted hundreds of runaway slaves in escaping to freedom.
