Lake View Cemetery
Lake View Cemetery is located in Cleveland, Ohio. Established in 1869, the cemetery covers 285 acres of land. Now the cities of Cleveland, Cleveland Heights, and East Cleveland surround Lake View Cemetery, which originally existed on a rural plot of land on the eastern edge of Cleveland.
Numerous important Cleveland and Ohio residents are interred in the cemetery. President James A. Garfield’s tomb and monument are located in Lake View Cemetery. Numerous politicians reside in the cemetery, including Carl B. Stokes and twenty-two mayors of Cleveland. Industrialist John D. Rockefeller also is interred in the cemetery, as is United States Treasury official Eliot Ness.
Besides being the final resting place of several prominent Ohioans, the cemetery is also the location of the Jeptha Wade Memorial Chapel. Wade was a prominent businessman from Cleveland. Louis Comfort Tiffany designed the chapel’s interior. The chapel’s stained glass windows are world renowned.
Lake View Cemetery is also known for its natural beauty. Thousands of plants exist in the cemetery, including some dating back to Cleveland’s founding. Every spring, a hillside explodes in color when 100,000 daffodil bulbs bloom.
