Gloria Steinem

Gloria Steinem is an author, journalist and well-known advocate of women's rights.

Steinem was born on March 25, 1934, in Toledo, Ohio. She graduated from Smith College in 1956. She worked as a volunteer in Adlai Stevenson's presidential campaign while still a student. After graduation,, Steinem spent two years in India.

Returning to the United States, Steinem became a journalist. For two years, she could not find work because many magazines were only interested in hiring men. She first worked as an assistant editor for Help! magazine in 1960. By 1963, she had left Help! and begun to work as a free-lance journalist. By this point, she was well respected for her investigative reporting and had completed an undercover investigation of Playboy. During this period, she also wrote scripts for the television program That Was the Week That Was. After covering Senator George McGovern's campaign for the U.S. presidency, Steinem became one of the founders and editors of New York magazine. As editor of New York, Steinem used her position to promote social activism. She was especially outspoken in her support of the women's rights movement. Steinem co-founded the National Women's Political Caucus, the Women's Action Alliance, the Coalition of Labor Union Women, and Ms. magazine. She continues to serve as an editor of Ms. magazine

Besides her many articles and editorials, Steinem has also written several books. Among these works are Outrageous Acts and Everyday Rebellions (1983) and Revolution from Within (1992).
